Architecture today is increasingly understood through the processes of its realization. Ways of working with material, processes of assembly, and strategies of scaling become part of architectural thinking. In the work of Fabio Gramazio – co-founder of Gramazio Kohler Research – digital manufacturing is explored not simply as a technical innovation, but as a force that reshapes the conditions of architectural production. Central to this approach is the close relationship between data and material, and the way their interaction transforms the design process itself. By enabling the direct fabrication of building components from digital models, this work expands the possibilities of construction while integrating material and production logic into design. In doing so, it gives rise to a distinct architectural expression and to a new aesthetic grounded in the realities of making. The discussion focuses on how these approaches reshape architecture and what happens to them under conditions of constraint, uncertainty, and the need for immediate response.
The event is addressed to a broader architectural community – architects, students, andьanyone interested in how architecture and construction are changing today.
It is part of a public programme through which we bring the topics we work with within the school into a more open setting.
