The webinar brings together three complementary approaches to safeguarding wooden heritage. The discussion will first explore the challenges and methods of documentation specific to wooden architecture, using the example of the global Endangered Wooden Architecture Programme. The second presentation will discuss approaches to conservation, focusing specifically on the ICOMOS Principles for the conservation of wooden built heritage. The final presentation will cover the issues of preservation and display of traditional wooden architecture in an open-air museum. The invited speakers will discuss recommendations for the preservation of the wooden architecture of Ukraine during the war, and in post-war rehabilitation.
Speakers: Professor Marcel Vellinga is the Director of the Endangered Wooden Architecture Programme (EWAP) at Oxford Brookes University. He is a researcher and teacher specialised in the anthropology of architecture, vernacular architecture, rural architectural regeneration, tradition, culture and sustainability, and ethnographic research methods. EWAP is a cultural grants programme that supports projects focusing on documenting wooden architecture endangered because of neglect, conflict or environmental circumstances.
Doug Evansis the Chair of the ICOMOS-UK Wood Forum. He is a Heritage consultant, trained as an architect, with over 40 years of professional experience in the appraisal, conservation, repair, and adaptive reuse of historic buildings and ancient monuments.
